2026 Rose Bowl Parade Honoree

Erik Rushford, the second of four children, grew up in the panhandle of Florida with a calm presence that anchored his busy household. Even in a lively family, Erik was thoughtful, level-headed, and compassionate, quietly supporting those around him.
From an early age, Erik displayed a wide range of talents and a deep curiosity about the world. Soccer was his greatest passion; he played throughout high school, coached youth teams, returned for alumni games, and cheered for his beloved Chelsea F.C. But his interests extended far beyond the field. Erik excelled in bowling, disc golf, and even climbing coconut trees on family vacations in the Bahamas. Academically gifted, he pursued computer science at the University of Florida’s School of Engineering, where his inquisitiveness and natural ability to teach others set him apart.
Despite his many gifts, Erik faced a long struggle with depression, diagnosed at age ten. Yet even while managing his own challenges, he remained committed to the people around him. He consistently showed up for family events, friends, and community activities, offering support and encouragement whenever it was needed. This empathy guided his actions throughout his life, shaping the ways he gave back to others.
Erik’s generosity extended well beyond his immediate circle. He championed community initiatives, such as providing holiday stockings for the homeless, and supported underprivileged students through his family’s angel tree program, covering the cost of school uniforms and gifts even while managing college expenses. His dedication to helping others reflected a deep understanding of struggle and a desire to make a meaningful impact wherever he could.
In 2023, Erik lost his battle with depression at the age of 22. In a final act of generosity, he saved lives through organ donation, including a 12-year-old who received his heart. His tissue donations have benefited 143 people, and his corneas provided sight to recipients as far away as the United Arab Emirates. Even in death, Erik continued to give, creating a legacy that improves lives and inspires hope around the world.

His family finds comfort and pride in the ongoing impact of his generosity. His mother, Christine, reflects, “We were so blessed just to have him. He lived a full life in 22 years. He always showed up for people, and in death he was able to show up again. It’s just exactly how it was supposed to be.” Through his life and his donations, Erik demonstrates the power of selfless giving, showing how one person can make a lasting difference. His story continues to inspire his family, community, and everyone touched by the organ and tissue donation system.
In recognition of his generosity, Erik will be celebrated in the 2026 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, as part of the One Legacy Donate Life float, a tribute that reflects the lives he has saved and the hope he continues to give.
Though his life was tragically brief, Erik Rushford’s story is one of compassion, generosity, and enduring impact. Through his actions and the gift of organ and tissue donation, Erik has left a legacy that saves lives, restores health, and offers hope, a legacy that will be remembered, celebrated, and carried forward for years to come.
