A Gift That Brought the Music Back

Jennifer | Bone Recipient

From the age of three, Jennifer’s life was defined by a diagnosis that could have limited her future. Doctors told her parents that rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease, might eventually leave her unable to care for herself and be confined to a wheelchair.

Her parents chose a different narrative. Instead of surrendering to fear, they enrolled her in violin lessons.

Today, 45 years later, Jennifer is a wife, mother, musician, and a public school music teacher of 25 years. Rheumatoid arthritis has brought ongoing challenges, but music has remained constant. “Music is my coping skill,” she says. It is also how she connects with her students, her church, and her community.

Last year, after multiple surgical fusions, Jennifer experienced numbness in her hands. The reduced sensation limited her ability to teach and to perform violin and other instruments, including bass, cello, and guitar. Most importantly, she regained her independence and her impact.

In March 2025, Jennifer received a tissue donation as part of a reconstructive procedure. The outcome allowed her to regain function in her hands and return fully to her classroom. She resumed playing and teaching music, continuing the work that has defined her career and influenced hundreds of students over the years.

For Jennifer, the impact of tissue donation is practical and far-reaching. It restored her ability to work, to serve her church, and to participate fully in family life. As someone grounded in her faith, she shared, “To have experienced a donation confirms God has a purpose for my life. My prayers for relief were answered.”

In gratitude, she wrote to her donor’s family through LifeNet Health’s Thanks2You program*, sharing what their loved one made possible: “You gave my family hope. We work as a team. Moving forward together has a profound impact on my family and the hundreds of students who count on me. You’ve made a difference in hundreds of lives.”

This is the power of tissue donation. One generous decision restored mobility, sustained a career, strengthened a family, and multiplied hope across generations of students. Jennifer’s story is one of triumphs made possible by the gift of donation.

* The Thanks2You program is an initiative by LifeNet Health that allows tissue recipients to express their gratitude to the families of their donors. Through heartfelt letters, recipients can share how the gift of donation has impacted their lives, providing healing, mobility, and a renewed sense of hope. The program serves as a bridge between donor families and recipients, offering a way to honor the generosity of donors while giving families a sense of comfort in knowing their loved one’s gift made a difference.
